Welcome to the NHGS Mathematics Department where ‘Provision in Mathematics is excellent.’ Ofsted Report 2005.
Our Mission: "The Mathematics Department aims to promote imaginative, thorough and innovative styles of teaching to enable pupils to gain a positive attitude to mathematics, developing confidence, enjoyment and perseverance. An ability to be precise and logical will be complemented by an appreciation of the wide applicability of mathematics - in the mathematics lesson itself, other subject areas and life in general."
The department has always prided itself on taking the lead in promoting new developments in teaching to enhance students learning experiences, particularly in the effective use of ICT. In the mid 1990’s, Mathematics successfully bid for a set of laptops to utilise in lessons – they are still being used, now in the Electronics department. More recently we were the first department in the school to bid for and install an interactive whiteboard; these are now in daily use in lesson delivery all over the school.
In 2004 the school was awarded Specialist College status, in the application to the DfES the following commitment was made ‘We intend to make the North Halifax Grammar School into the lead centre for science and mathematics education in the area.’
We are justifiably proud of our excellent results in public examinations at all levels but are even more proud of the positive attitude towards Mathematics displayed by students across the school, as evidenced particularly by the large numbers choosing to study the subject in the sixth form.
‘The very strong mathematical foundation provided in the main school…..is an important factor in the increased popularity of mathematics.’ Ofsted 2005 |
