The North Halifax Grammar School - A Specialist Science College

In January 2003 the DfES announced that North Halifax Grammar School bid to become a Specialist Science College had been accepted. This funding has enabled us to develop the science provision at NHGS and in the local community of parents, partner schools and sponsors. We have built a new science lab, prep room, work room and office and refurbished two more science labs and introduced new interactive whiteboard technology across the Mathematics Department. Take up of separate science GCSEs has increased from 23 students in 2003 to 71 in 2006.

The additional resources at NHGS have enabled us to invest in new buildings such as a new Science Centre which we opened formally in December 2005, provide new courses such as Human Biology at A level and more provision for separate sciences at GCSE as well as enriching the curriculum with specially organised activities for students at NHGS in all years. We are in the third year of working with our partner primary schools. We have also embarked on a very very successful programme of family education within the North Halifax community that involves family educational visits, robot making and healthy cooking.

"Thank you so much. I had a fantastic time, spending quality time with my children, which without schemes like these would not be possible! "
